Plea in SC seeks action against fringe elements [Governance]

  • Supreme Court agreed to urgently hear a petition seeking a judicial direction to the governments of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to “control” and act against the fringe elements which orchestrated violence in both States following the apex court order to release Cauvery water.
  • Widespread destruction of public and private properties had led to the infringement of fundamental rights to life and movement in the two States.
  • The petition has arraigned the Union Home Ministry, State Home Ministries of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Police Commissioners and the Chief Election Commissioner as respondent parties.
  • The plea has sought the apex court to direct them to take measures to prevent escalation of violence.
  • The petitioner wanted the court to direct the two States to “act” against parties like Kannada Rakshana Vedike, Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha and Tamizhaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi for “inciting regional parochial sentiments.
