PM Modi meets President Trump: India, US vow to defeat scourge of terrorism

Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi who is on a visit to the United States asserted that India and US are the global engines of growth. The Indian prime minister also remarked that they agreed on terrorism, extremism and radicalization and decided to cooperate on these issues.

Various issues that were discussed during the meeting between the Indian PM and US President Donald Trump:

To stand shoulder-to-shoulder in the fight against terrorism:

  • Explicit reference of the term cross-border terrorism was made in the joint statement for the first time
  • The leaders called on Pakistan to ensure that its territory is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries
  • It also asked Pakistan to bring to justice the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai, Pathankot, and other cross-border terrorist attacks that are perpetrated by Pakistan-based groups as soon as possible

China and Asia Pacific:

  • The term Indo-Pacific was used in the statement for the first time and is a more contemporary term than the Asia-Pacific
  • The leaders also
    • took a common position against the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and expressed reservations on Belt and Road Initiative
    • the importance of freedom of navigation and commerce throughout the region was also reiterated
    • Asked all nations to resolve territorial and maritime disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law

Developments related to defence:

  • The reference to Make in India initiative and the concept of co-production was avoided due to Trump administration’s focus on America first policy

International cooperation and coordination:

  • The statement reflects a stronger position on North Korea and strongly condemns continued provocations
  • US also welcomed India’s contributions to promote Afghanistan’s democracy, stability, prosperity and security
  • In accordance with India’s Think West policy, they resolved to increase tangible collaboration with partners in the Middle East

Reiteration & Reaffirmation:

  • On both NSG and UNSC permanent membership, there was continuity and support
