Dalai Lama’s Arunachal visit purely religious, says Rijiju

China has objected to the visit of Dalai Lama to Arunachal Pradesh. Beijing has even stepped its protest as it considers Arunachal Pradesh as its territory and refers to Dalai lama as a separatist leader.

China has even warned India of a serious damage to bilateral ties if it allows this visit to take place.

What the Tibetan spiritual leader plans to do in the visit:

  • He will hold religious discourses in Tawang, Bomdila and other areas
  • He will also consecrate (declare sacred) a gompa which is a Buddhist place of learning

India’s stand on the issue:

  • The visit of the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama to Arunachal Pradesh was purely religious and India has no plans to engage with the him and irritate China
  • India even consider China’s objection to the visit as an interference in internal matters of India
  • Arunachal Pradesh is not a disputed territory and India considers Chinese objections as a transgression on its sovereignty
  • India respects Beijing’s One China policy and expect China to reciprocate
  • Dalai Lama has even visited India on six occasions earlier and so no artificial controversy should be created on this issue

Other contentious issues in recent times:

  • China has opposed India’s membership to the Nuclear supplier group(NSG) despite attempts from India to engage China in a dialogue on the matter
  • China has even vetoed India’s attempt to designate Massod Azhar as a terrorist under the UN sanctions committee

Boundary dispute between India and China:

  • China claims that the disputed territory in the eastern part of the India-China boundary, that includes Tawang, is inalienable from China's Tibet in terms of cultural background and administrative jurisdiction
  • China even claims that the colonial British government which drew the Mcmohan line accepted Chinese claim over the Tawang region
  • China has refused to accept the McMohan line in case of India but accepted it to settle dispute with Myanmar
  • China has been willing to provide concessions on the eastern side if India provides similar concessions on the western side of the India-China boundary
  • This will provide China a strategic depth in the Aksai Chin region
